Overview

Through real-life case studies and examples, learn about the importance of fire safety in structures and how to improve it.

Structural fire engineering has the potential to improve fire safety of composite structures and optimise resource allocation, through better understanding of the effect fire has on structures.

The presenters will consider fire engineering design of composite steel/concrete structures and outline fire safety and fire resistance requirements.

They will discuss the key structural fire engineering design methods to achieve fire safety requirements and will use case studies to illustrate their application in practice.

Learning outcomes

  • Develop a good understanding of an important topic of structural safety that is generally not taught in structural engineering courses;

  • Awareness of how composite structures may benefit from structural fire engineering

  • Case studies of practical application of structural fire engineering in composite structure design

Intended for

Structural engineers, fire engineers, civil engineers, architects and fire protection engineers.

Speakers

Tom Lennon
Principal Consultant for Structural Fire Engineering, BRE

Over the last thirty years Tom has been responsible for numerous large-scale experimental fires on single elements, sub-assemblies and complete structures including high-rise buildings. He is an expert in the behaviour of structures in fire. He has developed extensive contacts with colleagues in the steel, concrete and timber industries and has worked with representatives from both the active and passive fire protection industries.

Florian Block
Associate Director, BuroHappold

Yong Wang
Professor of Structural and Fire Engineering, University of Manchester

Yong has over 30 years of experience in research, teaching and specialist consulting on fire engineering of structures, in particular steel and composite structures. He is a member of BSI committees on fire resistance and composite structures. He has been the only UK member on Eurocode project teams responsible for revision of Eurocodes EN 1993-1-2 and EN 1994-1-2. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
