CROSS Safety Report

Trench sheet naming confusion

Report ID: 814 Published: 30 June 2022 Region: CROSS-UK

Overview

A reporter involved with temporary works design has been made aware that there are two suppliers providing a trench sheet under the same name.

Key Learning Outcomes

For civil and structural design engineers:

  • It is good practice to specify the product manufacturer on construction drawings to avoid any ambiguity on site that may lead to safety issues

For the construction team:

  • Substitution of construction products should not be made without design team verification
  • Talk to the design team and regularly discuss your use of products, components, and materials.

A reporter involved with temporary works design has been made aware that there are two suppliers providing a trench sheet under the same name. However they are different sizes and have slightly different properties. Therefore if the design does not specify the manufacturer or the contractor looks for alternative products without informing the designer, an understrength sheet could be used rather than the one intended in the design.
