Overloading a portal frame with suspended services
A reporter designing a single storey portal frame used a standard roof service loading of 0.25kN/m2. After the project was completed, a tenant for the unit took over fit out and added a considerable amount of sprinkler pipework into the roof. This created local overloading.

Collapse of unusual hybrid concrete and steel strand truss on school roof
This report concerns the collapse of a school hall roof which resulted from the failure of one of a number of unusual hybrid concrete and steel strand trusses. Painted faying surfaces leads to connections with insufficient load capacity
Painted, rather than the required unpainted connection faying surfaces, were identified by the Resident Engineer of a reporter's firm during the erection of a primary frame for a large project. The painted surfaces resulted in the connections not having sufficient load carrying capacity and necessitated remedial works.
