CROSS Safety Alert

Failure of cast iron beams

Region: CROSS-UK Published: 1 January 2003

Overview

In 1988 there was a collapse of a cast iron roof beam within a jack arch construction, in a house within a London terrace. SCOSS does not believe that this represents a general problem with cast iron beam construction. However, certain combinations of actions may lead to an unsafe situation that should be investigated by a competent structural engineer.

Note: this Safety Alert was published by SCOSS (Standing Committee on Structural Safety). Since March 2021, SCOSS is integrated under the name Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS).
