Overview

CROSS has concerns about some structural aspects of roof mounted PV and solar thermal panels. Reports have been received of problems with installations including non-compliance with Building Regulations, quality of workmanship, and damage to existing roofs.

Recommendations are given for installation on new roofs and on existing roofs.

Note: this Safety Alert was published by SCOSS (Standing Committee on Structural Safety). Since March 2021, SCOSS is integrated under the name Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS).

Architects and designers, building control officers, PV and solar thermal panel providers/installers, civil and structural engineers working for installers and operating in the domestic market, together with all who are engaged in the installation or maintenance of such panels.
