A reporter comments on checking reinforcement before concrete pours. On one occasion they attended site at short notice and had been pressurised by a contractor to approve the reinforcement as a pour was imminent. The reporter had been met with hostility from the subcontractors if there were any issues to remedy.

The reporter wonders if younger more inexperienced engineers could buckle under this pressure and pass work that is not as per the design? The reporter has learned whilst making inspections to keep quiet and pass on any comments to the site manager who can then relay the information to the subcontractors.
