Timber framed buildings in fire situations - the role of the designer - update
Overview
This is an update of an earlier paper because there had been a number of severe fires in timber framed buildings during construction. The cause of these fires has been noted to be almost universally caused by arson and have occurred where the structural frame elements have not been protected by finishes.
Recommendations are made for eliminating hazards, mitigating risk, passing-on information for the construction process, and being aware of the risks in having multiple designers for different parts of the building.
Note: this Topic Paper was published by SCOSS (Standing Committee on Structural Safety). Since March 2021, SCOSS is integrated under the name Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS).
