CROSS Topic Paper
FC Twente stadium roof collapse
Overview
This paper concerns the collapse at the FC Twente Stadium in Holland in 2011 when part of a cantilever steel frame roof failed during erection.
It appears that overly-tight completion dates were allowed to drive the programme in an unsafe manner. The programme, whilst important, must never over-rule safety.
Note: this Topic Paper was published by SCOSS (Standing Committee on Structural Safety). Since March 2021, SCOSS is integrated under the name Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS).
Who should read this?
Principal Designers, civil and structural engineers, Principal Contractors, steelwork contractors and fabricators. Site supervisors and inspectors.
