CROSS Safety Alert

Temporary event structures - saddle span type tents

Region: CROSS-UK, CROSS-AUS, CROSS-US Published: 1 October 2010

Overview

Saddle span type tented structures appear to provide effective solutions to the needs of event organisers. However, they require careful design, erection and management and a list of precautions is given in the Alert.

It is common practice to base the safe use of temporary event structures on a limiting wind speed. In these cases it is essential that the limiting wind speed is clearly defined and then monitored on site.

Note: this Safety Alert was published by SCOSS (Standing Committee on Structural Safety). Since March 2021, SCOSS is integrated under the name Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS).

Who should read this?

Those who commission or procure or licence temporary stages and other temporary structures, for example large outdoor TV screens. Owners of sites and venues, promoters, contractors and their designers, local authority licensing officers and building control officers.
