A cast-in wire lifting loop failed when lifting a 4m diameter precast manhole cover slab into place.

  • Be aware that appropriate lifting anchors are required to resist the forces that are generated during the stripping, transportation and final installation of precast concrete units
  • Consider appointing a single entity (or Chartered Engineer) to have overall control of the design of the lifting system for stripping, transportation, and final installation

A contractor experienced a failure of the cast-in wire lifting loop on a 4m diameter precast manhole cover slab that was being lifted into place. The issuer of this warning said that when handling similar products utilising cast-in wire lifting loops products, users should not use lifting eyes without knowing them to be safe for use.
