CROSS Safety Report

Vertical cross bracing unbolted on-site

Report ID: 861 Published: 10 February 2023 Region: CROSS-UK

Overview

A reporter came across a situation on-site where a vertical cross bracing member of a temporary steel frame structure had been unbolted.

Key Learning Outcomes

For the construction team:

  • Quality control and competent supervision on-site can help to ensure that the structure is built in accordance with the design and prevent the removal of temporary bracing members

  • Having a competent temporary works designer/adviser in place to supply an engineered solution can ensure all temporary works are carefully considered and planned

  • Verification of temporary works erection by a competent person who can oversee and coordinate the whole process can also ensure the works are installed correctly

  • Temporary structures should be given the same degree of attention as primary structures during both design and construction

A reporter came across a situation on-site where a vertical cross bracing member of a temporary steel frame structure had been unbolted (Figure 1). The brace on the bottom bay, immediately below the unbolted member, was also only installed with one bolt. The reporter contacted the site manager, who did not understand the implications of the change but eventually re-bolted the bracing.
