Overview
This presentation, part of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Technical Lecture Series, will look at the bridge collapse and the reasoning for the subsequent CROSS Safety Alert.
It will examine:
- what happened in the lead up to the collapse
- why the collapse happened
- what can be learned by the industry to avoid a repeat event
It will give recommendations, thoughts for the future, and further reading materials. All of this will be aimed at preventing a future tragedy.

Steve is a Fellow Chartered Engineer of both the IStructE and ICE, with over 30 years design, construction and assurance experience, as consultant, contractor and client. A specialist in structural engineering and temporary works assurance, he has a passion and enthusiasm for delivering innovative and sustainable fully engineered solutions, integrating permanent works and temporary works, offering value for money and achieving client objectives in terms of cost, time and quality.
Steve is experienced in major infrastructure as well as building project design and delivery, with programme values of between £1M to £750M. He is currently the Principal Discipline Expert for Capital Delivery within Network Rails Technical Authority; responsible for technical governance. He actively promotes the open & honest dissemination of lessons learnt and good practice across the rail sector and wider industry, for the benefit of all.
He actively promotes Health and Safety by Design activities with the NR supply chain and works with the HSE, Temporary Works Forum, Structural Safety and others. He is a Supervising Civil Engineer for ICE and Mentor for the IStructE, helping to mentor and train the next generation of Civil and Structural Engineers.
