Lessons learned from the 2018 Florida bridge collapse during construction
This was a bridge of an unusual design and was being constructed in an unusual manner. The main 53m pre-stressed pre-cast concrete span truss was in position when cracks appeared at a node and over a period of almost three weeks they visibly worsened until collapse occurred.

The myth of quality assurance
This report argues that to achieve the objective of good quality construction that satisfies the design intent there is no substitute for the practice of regular site inspections being conducted by the original design engineer. It questions whether there has been too much reliance on the process of quality assurance systems to the detriment of the quality of the end product.

The management of design related risks: structural, civil and fire engineers
Significant, and tragic, failures involving structures continue to occur: fires in apartment blocks in Milan, London and Taiwan, and structural collapses in Florida and Nigeria being recent examples. This paper gives emphasis to the need for engineers to consider risk management at a fundamental level.

Temporary structures, such as stages, marquees, lighting towers, video screens and the like are erected at a huge number of events in the UK each year. A reporter who inspects many such structures raises concerns that the systems in place for ensuring their stability are not working.
