The management of design related risks: structural, civil and fire engineers
Significant, and tragic, failures involving structures continue to occur: fires in apartment blocks in Milan, London and Taiwan, and structural collapses in Florida and Nigeria being recent examples. This paper gives emphasis to the need for engineers to consider risk management at a fundamental level.

Volumetric modular buildings and fire
A report has been received concerning volumetric modular construction, in the form of permanent stacked modular buildings. The reporter is concerned that the existence of extensive cavities within the compartments, combined with the lack of appropriate care when connecting the modules could lead to the concealed spread of fire and smoke, noting some recent fire events.

Specifying resin by colour causes confusion
A mistake occurred on-site when resin for fixings was selected by colour of packaging rather than by colour of resin. The actual resin used did not reach sufficient strength and the installed fixing failed under a pull test.
