Snow loads on agricultural and other building structures
Snowfalls in 2010, and in the early part of 2011, caused a significant number of agricultural and associated buildings in Scotland, and a small number in the North of England, to partially fail or to collapse.

Temporary event structures - saddle span type tents
Saddle span type tented structures appear to provide effective solutions to the needs of event organisers. However, they require careful design, erection and management and a list of precautions is given in the Alert.

Incorrectly fixed sheets blow off parapet
This report concerns aluminium coping sheets that blew off the parapet of a block of flats under construction. The reporter says a fierce wind blew off several sheets which fell to the ground about 9m below. A building and a car were damaged but thankfully no one was hurt, although the potential for personal injury or death was significant.

Fire resisting doors fixed open in hot weather
When visiting a client during a period of unusually hot weather, it was noted that the vast majority of the building’s fire resisting door sets were wedged open in an attempt to increase ventilation and reduce internal temperatures.

Frustration about getting a response to a public safety concern
A member of the public reported a partially collapsed retaining structure to bodies they believed could be the responsible authority. Despite continued efforts to get attention to the issue, there was no apparent action to address the concern. This raised the reporter’s concern for public safety.
